In class Spa 301S Spanish Language in Latino Community meets the MLO 5 Cultural Praxis. The purpose of this class is to provide community service to different agencies and organizations to improve service to the community. During class we had the opportunity to listen to different representatives who explained their needs and Professor Gómez gave us a list of all the places where we could complete our service. The main reason for this class is that students create a connection to the Latino community and put into practice your Spanish to communicate with these people. I did my community service at the center Womens Infants and Children (WIC) located in Salinas, CA. This center had the opportunity to participate in the event of "Labor of Love" which is held annually and aims to inform women, monterey county, about prenatal care purpose. During my stay there I helped the coordinator to cover gifts, translating various documents in Spanish and distributing leaflets to the community in East Salinas. As part of this event I realized that most women in monterey county are not informed of the risks that can have a pregnancy. For these people in the community, eg Hartnell College collaborated with participation by providing information to the public about the effects caused by smoking and drinking during pregnancy. I wish to continue participating in such events because I know that my participation helped inform women of my community prepare for and take care of your health and that of their children. The inform the Latino community is important because statistics show that most low-income women do not take prenatal care because of the lack of information.
