SPA 313: Intro to Hispanic Linguistics
Intro to Spanish Linguistics: Presents the principal branches of linguistic study, as it pertains to Spanish: the sound system (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), and the structure of sentences (syntax). Additionally, attention is paid to bilingualism, especially Spanish in the US, and how Spanish is spoken/written differently by various social groups (sociolinguistics) and in various Spanish-speaking countries (dialectology).
Course Reflective Narrative
Spanish 313 class is an introduction to linguistics in Spanish and fit the requirement of MLO 2. This class discusses the origin of the Spanish language and how certain cultures that came to the Iberian peninsula have contributed to the language. An example is the domain and the presence of the Arabs in the Iberian Peninsula from 711 which left an indelible mark on the Spanish, contributing more than four thousand words to the vocabulary of Spanish primarily semantic fields as in the trades, mathematics, agriculture, science, literature and food. This information I learned in class has helped me learn a little about the history of my first language, Spanish, and its appearance in the twentieth century in Castile, Spain. In this class we perform activities that introduced us to subjects such as phonics, word and sentence structure. By testing, classroom activities and tests could identify linguistic study and present it in class individually. Through these activities I can identify the purpose of each word and recognize how it can convey different messages depending on their placement in the sentence. It is very important for me to be able to communicate by means of morphology and synthesis, as I learned through this are not just words but those expressed different feelings. To me this is very interesting and would like to learn more about the linguistic study because through the words are different tracks that other culturan we have left and which we use today to speak, write and think. A single word can have more than one meaning, it exists a history and origin of which may never discover clearly. Language is a term which defines certain ways to create words, which serve us as a form of communication. It is important to mention that a language also describes part of its history and the passing of time the words change as people join it. It is therefore very important to keep these modern languages because many of them are disappearing with time, leaving behind a simple track that nobody else will tread, in other words to lose your tongue and your home is completely lost the essence of your culture.
